La fecha era el 23 de enero de 2019. FC Barcelona anunció que había conseguido el fichaje de una de las jóvenes más prometedoras del fútbol europeo, Frenkie de Jong del Ayax. Pero si el traspaso se ha hecho oficial, el jugador no llegará al club catalán hasta final de temporada, el 1 de julio, con 22 años. El resto es historia.
De Jong disputó su primer partido oficial el 16 de agosto de 2019 en el Athletic Club, el mismo estadio al que él y su equipo viajarán el jueves para disputar los cuartos de final de Copa. Esperemos que el resultado sea mejor que hace cinco años, cuando el Barça perdió 1-0 en la jornada inaugural del campeonato, con De Jong jugando los 90 minutos completos.
Ha sido uno de los jugadores más importantes del equipo durante la siguiente media década, alcanzando 200 apariciones contra los Unionistas en la copa la semana pasada. Actualmente es el sexto holandés con más partidos disputados con la camiseta blaugrana y ha ganado la Supercopa de España, La Liga y la Copa del Rey durante su etapa aquí.
En 201 partidos, De Jong ha marcado 16 goles y dado 19 asistencias, aunque estas no son sus principales funciones en el equipo. Su papel es más bien el de mediapunta en el centro del campo, en el que destaca y todos los entrenadores con los que ha jugado le han considerado parte fundamental de sus proyectos, incluido por supuesto Xavi Hernández, con el que muchas veces se le ha comparado.
