Capitán en todos los sentidos, el centrocampista catalán volvió a resultar decisivo en un partido que había que ganar. Puede que no haya jugado desde la Copa del Rey del 24 de enero contra el Athletic Club, pero el capitán lució el brazalete con orgullo y ayudó a impulsar al equipo a los cuartos de final de la Liga de Campeones.
Fue en el minuto 60 cuando Xavi solicitó la entrada de Sergi Roberto en el centro del campo. En sustitución de Fermín, el capitán entró en el campo cuando más lo necesitaban los blaugranas, ya que la segunda parte no había empezado muy bien. El Nápoles apretaba y los de Xavi podían haber encajado el 2-2.
Sin embargo, Roberto hizo gala de compostura y tranquilidad sobre el terreno de juego para reconducir la situación hasta que el equipo anotó el gol para sellar la victoria. El catalán había jugado sólo 716 minutos esta temporada hasta el martes, sumando otros 34 minutos en el que era potencialmente el periodo más importante de esta temporada.
El veterano sólo necesitó media hora para marcar diferencias en defensa, pero aún más en ataque. Creó tres oportunidades, completó diez pases finales hacia el tercer tercio y, sobre todo, asistió a Lewandowski en el tercer gol decisivo en los octavos de final.
El catalán podría haber marcado él mismo, pero hizo gala de gran compostura para pasar el balón por encima del delantero polaco y rematar a portería vacía.
Al igual que en la temporada 16/17, Sergi Roberto jugó un papel fundamental en la clasificación para los cuartos de final de la competición europea, recompensada con una aparición tras cuatro años de ausencia.
